ST. LOUIS (July 7, 2008) – LDI Integrated Pharmacy Services has acquired St. John’s Mercy MedScript, a pharmacy benefits company specializing in mail-order services with recorded revenue of almost $54 million in 2007. The acquisition enhances LDI’s mail-order capabilities as well as adds depth to the company’s pharmacy benefit management offerings and specialty pharmacy expertise, including HIV services.
The purchase price is not being disclosed. Most of the MedScript employees have accepted positions with LDI.
“LDI and MedScript share a common philosophy of high-touch, exceptional customer service,” said Leonard S. Dino Jr., Pharm. D., CEO, LDI Integrated Pharmacy Services. “At LDI, we’re also continually looking for ways to save plan members money while improving patient care. Now, the innovative programs we’ve created over the years, such as specialty pharmacy cost management, can be delivered to a broader customer base.”
John Hermann, senior vice president of St. John’s Mercy Health Care, said LDI’s “commitment to quality and customer service make it a good match for MedScript and the timing is right for the combined resources to serve their members and grow together.”
The combined company will have 100 employees in St. Louis with satellite offices in Kansas City, Mo.; Phoenix, Ariz.; and Tulsa, Okla. Nationally, LDI serves health insurance agents, brokers and consultants; third party administrators; and self-insured organizations, including serving as exclusive specialty pharmacy vendor for Munich Re America HealthCare ─ one of the largest global health care reinsurers.
LDI Innovations and Client Cost Containment Examples
LDI has led the way on several industry firsts, including being one of the first independent companies to offer discounted prescription service, modified unit dose medications for long-term care patients, and managed care strategies for pharmacy benefits.
The company also has helped clients contain costs through a variety of services. For example, LDI innovations have addressed the issue of rising specialty medication costs, such as infusion treatments for cancer patients, by providing clients with a new way to track, recode and manage costs for specialty pharmaceutical claims. Over the past four years, LDI has saved clients almost $10 million in specialty pharmacy costs alone.
In 2006, LDI saved the Saint Louis County Department of Health more than $1.5 million in pharmacy expenditures.
“Our partnership with LDI has been very successful. In addition to a significant cost reduction, working with LDI has resulted in improved convenience and increased accessibility for our clinic patients,” said Dr. Dolores J. Gunn, director, Saint Louis County Department of Health.
In addition, ITA Partners, a large oncology risk management company, has worked in partnership with LDI to help their clients get the most out of their insurance benefits.
“LDI helps provide expensive life-saving medications at significantly reduced rates, which ultimately maximizes our participants’ limited lifetime insurance chemotherapy benefits,” said Susan Spalding, senior vice president, ITA Partners.
There will be no change to MedScript customers’ benefit coverage or services. The MedScript pharmacy in Earth City will be closed as of June 27, 2008, and all of its prescriptions will be transferred to the LDI pharmacy at 680 Craig Road, Suite 103, Creve Coeur, Mo., 63141. Customers can also continue to use their existing MedScript member cards at any retail pharmacies in LDI’s network.
The MedScript phone numbers will remain in operation until Jan. 1, 2009. However, customers should start using LDI’s patient care line at 866-516-3121 for questions about their prescriptions and benefit plans or to place mail orders.
